Art Gallery

Included in my Dreams List in this blog in 2008 was to have an art gallery run by my own foundation which I named "A LEAF".  It stands for "A Life Every Artwork Foundation".  But when I learned that a million pesos is needed to put up a foundation, I forgot about that dream. It was indeed an impossible dream.

My projected serious participation in an art gallery this year starting with an art exhibit was unexpected. Even my improvement in painting was unexpected, nor the tour to the Underground River of Palawan last year that inspired me was unexpected. More unexpected situations like my special child's need for a tailor-fit wheelchair as she grows that will require me to have an income to afford those special needs.  What else would come unexpectedly to lead me to the realization of an impossible dream, only God knows.

What is clear so far is I will not be alone and should not be alone to realize such dream.  It doesn't have to be my own "A LEAF", it could be something else with the same mission of helping a person live a life through an artwork.

Braces for Lyca - Part 1

Parents always have big dreams for their children.  When a child has special needs however, those dreams tend to be diminished in number and greatness.  I can be wrong though, because a lot of blind children become accomplished or great persons when they grow up.  I now have different thoughts from the time I started writing this. I am now thinking, why should I think of limited dreams for Lyca? We planned to sell our piano but what if it will help Lyca become a great pianist someday even with a very weak left hand? She might be multi-handicapped due to her cerebral palsy and blindness, but only God knows what is in store for her.

My main dream for Lyca used to be for her to be seizure-free.  Though we don’t notice her experiencing obvious seizures nowadays, that should still be verified with an EEG she has to undergo soon. I’ve dreamed she would also be able to walk and talk someday, but I knew those were really big dreams so maybe I should tackle the “hows” one at a time.

The rehab doctor confirmed that Lyca will need braces for her legs and another braces for her scoliosis. I will focus my time to accomplishing these two needs this coming month of April. She will also need a wheelchair. By the time I write the Part 2 of this post, Lyca should already be wearing braces. In the meantime, the video here will show Lyca supported by me (in green) throughout their presentation, unlike the other blind kids beside her who could walk on their own.

Another dream that will help support all our dreams for Lyca is for us to finally get the right bedspacers for us to have additional regular income. I'm hoping that can be very soon too.

One dream

We tend to dream for a lot of things, most of them material things. But these material things are just temporary and will only make us dream for more or better material things.

Until I've encountered a message intended for me, to show everyone to true peace and happiness, and considered it to be my biggest dream. But on second thought, that shouldn't be just a dream but a direction to a way of living and I know everyone will agree. The ways and means to that direction seem hard to find or think about, but I know God will be there to make things happen.

I am therefore back to dreaming about one dream that seem hard to achieve: the right education and therapies for my special child without any cost, since I simply can't afford them. That was why I've thought about the possibility of going to U.S.A. to fulfill that, but even for air fare, I no longer have.

Gone are the days when I had enough money to fulfill most of my dreams, all of which were material things or means to make more money. But none among them brought me true peace and happiness.

Perhaps I should focus on that one dream for my special child. I'm sure fulfilling that dream will bring me true peace and happiness.

What lies in the future

This is a Sponsored Post written by me on behalf of NMEDA. All opinions are 100% mine.

I've always wondered about Lyca's future. Only this week, I've seen a young man with cerebral palsy walking on the sidewalk. Although he looked pitiful because of his abnormal gait, at least he could walk, and I wished Lyca could do that too, someday. But looking at the situation in another perspective, he could be prone to road accidents. He could get to a place faster with the help of a motorized wheelchair maybe.

And then today, I've read more about NMEDA or National Mobility Equipment Dealers Association, the organization that can help families get the right equipment for a disabled family member. This organization doesn't sell equipments, it is affiliated with dealers or NMEDA members who sell handicap vans and vehicle modifications for disabled people. Isn't that awesome? An organization is focused on looking after the vehicle or equipment needs of the disabled.

NMEDA also has Quality Assurance Program (QAP) dealers. The Quality Assurance Program (QAP) is the only nationally recognized accreditation program for the Adaptive Mobility Equipment Industry. It is based on the principle that in order to satisfy customers consistently, companies must have a systematic and documented approach to quality.

I can now imagine what Lyca's future can be like. Whether she would walk on her own or not, it won't really matter. NMEDA can help us choose the dealer with the right equipment for her. It is not easy to take care of a special needs child because it could be depressing at times. We, the people taking care of Lyca would like to try our best to make her less dependent someday, but there were times it seemed hopeless. Just recently though, I've seen more facilities in the U.S. that will help Lyca improve. I guess we need to push through with that plan to go there. And I'm just glad that there's an organization that can educate us to buy Lyca's future equipments from a qualified dealer.

Glimpses of my future

In July 2002, my daughter dreamed that I gave birth to a baby girl. A few years before that, I dreamed that I gave birth to a third child, a fair and chink-eyed baby boy with nice teeth.

Both dreams were far from reality because my whole uterus was removed in the year 2000. I can't remember which came first, my surgery or the dream about the chink-eyed baby, but nobody among us in the immediate family was chink-eyed.

What amused my daughter and me was a week after her dream, a baby was born inside our house. Who gave birth is another long story so you may just click this link for that story.

The baby had grown to be Lyca, our special needs child, and I just realized that the chink-eyed baby boy in my dream looked like her, almost like Lyca's photo in this post. The baby in my dream looked like a boy because of the short hair. Does that mean the arrival of that child to my family was part of God's plan several years ago? In my thoughts, I wished for a baby but that was already after my surgery. The dreams in our sleep can bring us to the future but more often than not, we only realize that when that time in the future has come. Why the dream about the child instead of other significant events that may happen? Perhaps because my life will be focused on this child. Life is truly a mystery and only God knows the answers to most of our questions.

I've read in a natural health news that the best alternative therapy for children with cerebral palsy like Lyca is acupuncture and music therapy. I'm glad that we're on the right track, has started doing non-invasive or needleless acupuncture on Lyca and has exposed her to the piano.

Maybe Lyca has a mission in life, or I have a mission in life and Lyca will have a big part in that mission.

My Prodigy

I think I have a prodigy at home. She may be blind, has a hypertonic right hand and hypotonic left hand as a result of cerebral palsy, but I'm sure she can be a prodigy. Who knows, she might have a dream too, to be a good pianist like her adult sister, Holly.

Lyca will be eight years old this coming July 24. I used to believe I needed a job to be able to support a special needs child like Lyca, but after her caregiver left and I had more time to be with her, I now believe I should always be with her, discover what she can do or what she wants to do, and how she is able to communicate that want. So far, whenever she wants to play the piano, I am able to know that through her gestures and facial expressions.

I still give myself time to research for technologies that might improve her condition and I'm glad to learn that the 660 nanometer photon found on the mattress we have at home can help. I have to research more deeply about the ideal duration for her to be exposed to photon, when to stop, and when to resume exposure. Anyone who knows the answers?

Voice out your dreams!

Five years ago, when I was involuntarily retired just like my husband who was retired a year earlier than me, I found it necessary to study Interior Design to support my husband's possible venture in renovating offices or houses. However, my studies compromised an earlier promise to send my special child's caregiver to school, but promised that after I finish, which would be after two years, we'll push through with the plan for her to study.

Unfortunately, I had to stop my studies for financial reasons. The renovation business did not materialize, succeeding business ventures did not work, the coffee kiosk business remained but couldn't support any extra expenses and we had to pay cash for the balance of the lot where we've already paid 20% down payment. Until we can no longer sustain the coffee kiosk and I had to find a job but was not fortunate to find one. To continue my schooling as well as that of the child's caregiver was still in my thoughts but I had no choice but to defer those dreams. Until the caregiver sent her younger sister to school, I didn't notice that another two years had passed, because I thought that she decided to sacrifice herself since she and her sister couldn't go to school at the same time. She will need to shell out money for her own studies since it was not possible for her to depend totally on me for her studies, by the time I will have money to help her. During those times of financial crisis, I always dream in my sleep about a class I had to attend but either I forgot about my schedule or I will already be late for the class.

Early this month, the caregiver of my child left with a broken heart though she told me she'll just have a vacation. She never voiced out her dream to continue studying maybe because the previous years, she knew that I had to find a job and when I found one last year, I needed to wait to be regularized. For health reasons however, I had to resign meaning I won't be receiving a monthly income again. Maybe, if only she voiced out about her dream, I could have done something about it. She knew that I still continue dreaming for her because more than once in the recent past, I told her it would be good for her to study Physical Therapy and open a Wellness Center in their province someday. She never said anything about that idea, nor voiced out any other options she preferred.

I am very sad because she left telling others I did not fulfill any promise I made. It was never my intention not to fulfill those promises, in fact, a month before her scheduled vacation, I told her that one promise I made can soon be realized, and that was for us to go to Hongkong and visit the Disneyland there, together with my husband and sister-in-law, and that can surely push through as our Tiens' Indonesian upline's incentive to me, my husband and sister-in-law for the ranks we attained in Tiens.

Perhaps taking care of a special needs child takes a lot of patience and if that can be the compromise to voice out one's dreams to fulfill them, one can have second thoughts about voicing them out. But I admire my caregiver's patience and I believe there were other reasons that, or the totality of several reasons, kept her silent. Anyway, I'm still hoping and praying that she'll come back.

Now I'm sure I won't dream about a missed class in my sleep anymore, because it isn't really my dream, but somebody else's dream that is more important to be fulfilled.

My biggest dream remains, and that is for me and my special child to go to U.S.A. for a sponsored rehabilitation program for my child. Her caregiver was part of that dream, if her VISA will be approved, I told her.

Serious prayers are answered

It wasn't really too long when we started to pray seriously about a lot of wishes or needs. That was when we started praying with Lyca, our special needs child. From the expression of her face, we felt the seriousness of our prayers. One by one, those prayers were gradually answered.

Most of the dreams I published here were not included in our prayers. Maybe because they are big dreams. Maybe I should start praying seriously to make these dreams come true. Included in my big dreams was for Lyca to be able to walk. Some people close to Lyca pray for that and I can see that it is slowly being granted. I pray for that too, but not with Lyca. Maybe if we include that in our prayers with her, that will be answered faster like our other prayers. When Lyca prays, she's almost crying with her hands tightly clasped, as if asking for mercy.

A forgotten dream

Sometimes the dreams in our sleep remind us of dreams or goals that we seem to have forgotten. Last night, I dreamed that I was about to go to U.S.A. The reason was not clear in my dream. When I woke up, I was still thinking about it till I was reminded of a goal or dream I intentionally have forgotten because of lack of funds for transportation. It has been a dream to bring Lyca, my special needs child to an Elks center in the U.S. for children with cerebral palsy.

Maybe I should pursue that plan, or at least start to study the possibility of pursuing it. What remains in the adoption of Lyca is the registration of her birth using her new name but we still have to wait till the 30 days is over, from the day the finality of the court's decision was released. I haven't even checked yet how long we should wait but time flies and for all we know we should already be attending to the registration of her birth.

I'm now very careful with every cent that I get and that is probably the reason why I've ignored to think about that plan though there's a possibility a real property where we have a share might be sold this year. I think I've connected that particular plan too much to winning the Lotto to cover the expenses, because just before that dream in my sleep, I was thinking of a new dream to put up a Wellness Center if the real property I was talking about will be sold.

My dream last night has somehow enlightened me to prioritize people like Lyca, over new business plans. I just hope and pray that God will continue to lead me to the right path, even through the dreams in my sleep.

The unexpected

The unexpected is not part of anyone's dream but I was filled with several unexpected events the past two days that even caused me not to be able to post in my Dreams List blog on time.

I really waited for Valentine's Day before publishing a post, thinking I might be able to come up with a great post for Valentine. Before that day though, some "unexpected" situations or events happened. I and my two friends decided to meet in a restaurant, but on our way there, I saw another restaurant where I was able to try some food that I liked so much. I described them to my friend who was with me and she started to crave for them. When we met our other friend at the agreed restaurant, we decided to transfer to the other restaurant I was talking about. We walked more than a block to get there, but when we reached the place, there was a sign that the place was not open to public because of a previous reservation. There was another popular restaurant nearby so we decided to just settle there.

That was the first "unexpected" situation. The second was when we got our bill, we found out that the drink alone costs Php500. It was an exotic drink and since it goes with a teddy bear that can be given as a Valentine gift, the price might be reasonable, I told my friends.

On Valentine's Day the next morning, I gave our special child the teddy bear and she was so happy. She hugged it tightly and I was surprised when it said "I love you" twice. That was the third unexpected event, and suddenly, the drink became priceless to me!

More unexpected situations followed but I've already published them in my new blog "Amusing Tips", so just link to the story here.

A dream can be so focused and the dreamer very determined and decided to realize it. Until the unexpected happens which can totally erase a dreamer's dream. I was one of those dreamers. Were you one of us?

Dreams for 2009

Here are my dreams for 2009:

1. To win in Lotto! If I win the jackpot, I will go to Europe with a choir and my family, while the major part of my winnings will be properly planned for Lyca, my special needs child's program in the U.S. (if still necessary), and the organization of a foundation for artists and poor children with cerebral palsy next year.

2. To be a contestant in Deal or No Deal (LOL), and if I win a big amount, I'll continue my Interior Design course.

3. To earn more from my blogs, but this will only happen if you'll continuously visit them (please).

I can't believe only the above 3 are my dreams for this year. Maybe because I knew that my more important realistic dreams are about to come true. What are they?

1. To own a Tiens Dream Bio-energy Health Mattress.
2. For Lyca to be able to walk.
3. For Lyca to be able to talk.

Unconditional love and a standing box

For the sixth birthday of Lyca, our special child, the best gift we can give her aside from our unconditional love, is a standing box. My mother-in-law paid for its construction which was designed by one of Lyca’s physical therapists (the guy on the photo with her), while my husband and I are now taking care of its finishing touches. At the right side of the first photo is a part of the unfinished standing box.

A dream is about to come true, with the help of this standing box. Lyca will soon be able to stand on her own! After that, she should be able to walk too, of course with a guide since she is blind too, aside from the cerebral palsy that is hindering her to move normally.

Another dream is for her to be able to talk normally. I know that is not impossible because I was able to teach her to say “Mama” very clearly whenever she needs me.

I'm Dreaming Again!

One dream that I haven’t included in my Dreams List was to have a home in the United States of America. That was because in the past I’ve decided to stay in the Philippines. But changes happen like the unexpected arrival of a special child to my life. I no longer plan for myself because what is more important now is how to give this special child who is blind and has cerebral palsy, the best therapies that will enable her to walk, talk and live a normal life. The best that I can think of is the program of Elks, which can be found in several parts of the United States like Ohio.

At present, all my plans for my special child’s therapy at Elks will come true if I win the lotto. But maybe, it is not the only way. Who knows, unexpected events can happen again that will allow our special child’s therapy at Elks, and even allow our family to own a house in U.S.A. I’ve stumbled upon a website of Real Estate in The Cleveland Ohio Area and while looking at the photos of the houses, I can’t help but dream again. A lakefront house with the beautiful view of Lake Erie just like in the photo shown is definitely a dream house! I can enjoy my favorite view of the sunset while Lyca our special child will enjoy the waters of the beach resorts all around! To top it all, the Ohio Elks Association Children’s Developmental Center at Amherst is just nearby!

Oh well, I’ve intentionally forgotten to have a dream house in the Philippines, but now I’d like to have a dream house in U.S.A., and at Cleveland, Ohio at that! Thanks to the contest of “Cleveland Ohio Real Estate Blog” for inspiring me to dream again. I won’t win a house and lot (LOL), if the readers thought it’s the prize of the contest, but I can win $25 or Entrecard credits.

Whatever, there is still a prize for being inspired, and that is the opportunity to share your dreams, as well as your own inspiring true stories!

Row, row your boat

While I was typing my message for everyone in Twitter to "share your dream" through this blog, I heard my special child's voice which means she just woke up. I got her and sat her on my lap while typing and at the same time singing...

Row, row, row your boat
Gently down the stream
Merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily
Life is but a dream

I repeatedly sang those lines until I began to "internalize" each word and realize that such a simple nursery rhyme has a very deep meaning!

Life is but a dream, but you have to row your boat... gently down the stream, which can be full of challenges and obstacles.

It can be very tiring to row your boat alone because you have to row left and right. The boat will move smoothly if you have a partner, or a team if it's a big boat. I saw a movie where a leader prompts when to row so that the big boat can move smoothly and swiftly.

We may all have different dreams but if we give each other moral support and realize that we are in a WIN-WIN situation whatever our role is, we can create a synergy that will help us attain our dreams.
